Lonely Planet

Ping Anchorage ((6262020; www.pinganchorage.com.my; 77A Jalan Sultan Sulaiman) organises numerous tours around Terengganu, included day trips to Tasik Kenyir (RM125) and river cruises on Sungai Marang (RM110) and Sungai Terengganu (RM95). The latter takes in Pulau Duyung and the mangroves, and stops at the tiny village of Kampung Jeram, with its exotic fruit trees and Chinese temple. Prices are per person and a group of two; prices decrease for larger groups. It's also the best place for package deals to the islands and Tasik Kenyir, and for discounted hotel rooms.

Pulau Redang, Terengganu - Accommodation on Pulau Redang is best organised as a package in Kuala Terengganu; tour companies such as Ping Anchorage sell packages for all the resorts.

Pulau Lang Tengah, Terengganu - Ping Anchorage ((6262020; www.pinganchorage.com.my; 77A Jalan Sultan Sulaiman) in Kuala Terengganu can arrange reasonably priced packages.

Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu - If you book a package in Kuala Terengganu with Ping Anchorage, it can provide minibus transport; it also does day trips to the lake. There are no buses to the lake from Kuala Terengganu.

Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu - Ping Anchorage Travellers' Inn ((6262020; www.pinganchorage.com.my; 77A Jalan Sultan Sulaiman) spread over two floors above the travel agency of the same name, this is the best budget option in town. Rooms are simple but spotless, and there's a rooftop terrace and downstairs cafe. Rooms with bathroom go for RM38. Inviting little cafe under the same management as the neighbouring travel agency. Noodles, omelettes, and burgers and chips are on the menu, and it's also a good place to relax with a drink and meet up with fellow travellers.

Kota Bharu, Kelantan - Ping Anchorage ((7442020; www.pinganchorage.com.my; 1121-B Jalan Padang Garong; À 8am-5pm Sat-Thu) runs a variety of half-day tours including town tours (adult/child RM75/37.50) taking in a batik factory, silversmith and the main town sights; a river cruise (adult/child RM129/64.50); and a tour round the Thai temples of the Tumpat district (adult/child RM80/40). It also offers a day trip to the Jelawang jungle area by car, boat and train (RM159).

Georgetown, Penang - Ping Ancohrage ((3977993; www.pinganchorage.com.my; 25B Jln Todok 2, Seberang Jaya) over on the mainland runs several tours including the four-hour Hill and Temple tour, visiting Penang Hill and the Kek Lok Si Temple, round-island tours and trips to Penang National Park. All cost RM129 (cheaper for groups of three or more), including pick-up from your hotel.

Rough Guides

Kuala Terengganu - Travel agents - Ping Anchorage Travel and Tours, 77A Jalan Sultan Sulaiman (09/6262020, www.pinganchorage.com.my), is one of the country's most successful travel agents; efficient and well organized, they offer numerous packages and plenty of information on sights throughout the east coast and the interior.

Ping Anchorage Backpackers Lodge, 77A Jalan Sultan Sulaiman 09/6262020, www.pinganchorage.com.my. A range of basic rooms with fan, louvred internal windows and cement flooring, all sharing facilities, plus one dorm and one a/c en-suite room. There's also a rooftop garden to lounge in and use of a washing machine, and the management - the travel agency whose premises are below - also run a great cafe with satellite TV a couple of doors away. The only niggle is that as this is a basically a sideline of the firm's burgeoning tour-booking business, it can occasionally feel as though you're left to your own devices while staff get on with their work. Still, a very good deal. Dorm beds RM9, rooms?

Ping Anchorage Travellers Cafe, Jalan Sultan Sulaiman. Backpackers' mecca serving Western cafe food with some local dishes thrown in. There's also satellite TV with live football matches and good films, and beer. Daily 7am-11pm.

Kota Bharu, Kelantan - Ping Anchorage, the very efficient Kuala Terengganu-based tour operator, who have a branch office on Jalan Padang Garong (09/7442020)

Kuantan, Pahang - Ping Anchorage, the Kuala Terengganu-based travel agent, sells its extensive range of east-coast packages from its branch on Jalan Tun Ismail (09/5142020, www.pinganchorage.com.my)

Frommer's

Borneo (Beyond the Safari: Wildlife Tours in Asia and South America) - This rather large island located in the South China Sea is actually split between three countries -- the independent Sultanate of Brunei, the states of Sarawak and Sabah belonging to Malaysia, and Kalimantan which is part of Indonesia. As one of the last bastions of true wilderness, wildlife thrives here -- especially simians. Orangutans are one of the most intriguing residents and the easiest place to see them is at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre located near Sandakan in the north east of Sabah. The orangutans roam free here and you may be fortunate enough to have one come right up to you and touch you. Even if you are staying in the more tourist-oriented area of Kota Kinabalu (where the international airport is located), hotels and tour companies run one-day tours that generally feature round-trip flights, a visit to Sepilok and, if you are lucky, a mangrove boat trip to see the extremely rare and amusing Proboscis monkeys (with huge bulbous noses and coloring that makes them look like they are wearing Y-front white underwear). For more in-depth discovery in Sabah, consider a tour that takes in the Sungai Kinabatangan river, home to Asian elephants, orangutans, marbled cats, deer, giant squirrels and Sumatran rhinos. Tour companies like Ping Anchorage (www.pinganchorage.com.my) offer accommodation in comfortable lodges near the town of Sakau located close to the lower Kinabatangan River. A three-day, two-night Ping Anchorage tour that includes visits to Sepilok, a boat tour down the Kinabatangan river, two nights' accommodations at the Sakau Rainforest Lodge, seven meals, all transfers and an English speaking guide is priced at $259 per person based on double occupancy until March 31, 2007 and $281 from April 1, 207 to March 31, 2008. Airfare to Sandakan to commence to tour is additional.

Where To Stay (What's New: An Online Update for Frommer's Singapore and Malaysia) - An extraordinary resort is opening in peninsular Malaysia's east coast state, Terengganu. The Terrapuri Heritage Village is slated to open in mid-2008. This oceanfront resort is constructed of 28 traditional Terengganu-style Malay houses, some as old as 200 years. Lovingly restored to the tune of RM2 mil (US$590,000) using only traditional methods, each house will also provide guests with a background of its architectural style and reconstruction details. The resort is located just next to a turtle wildlife sanctuary, looking out to the islands of Redang and Perhentian, which offer excellent scuba and snorkeling, and 45 minutes from Kuala Terengganu's great handicrafts shopping -- making it truly a Have-It-All vacation spot in Malaysia. Advance bookings can be made through Ping Anchorage at tel. 09/626-2020.
